A contagious campaign created by Duval Guillaume-Antwerp, part of Publicis Worldwide, for Alfa Romeo has helped generate record sales for the brand in Belgium.
A contagious campaign created by Duval Guillaume-Antwerp, part of Publicis Worldwide, for Alfa Romeo has helped generate record sales for the brand in Belgium. The campaign has also been awarded a Five Star review by The Financial Times.
Launched prior to the Brussels-based European Car Show 2010, the campaign aimed to create awareness of Alfa Romeo’s price promotions while maintaining the aspirational value of the brand.
It contains a viral video showing a “unique team of explorers from Alfa Rome Belgium” travelling off the coast of Guam island with a specifically constructed billboard advertising the lowest price ever for an Alfa Romeo 147. The spoof video shows the team lower the billboard to the lowest known point of the planet – some 11,000 metres.
The campaign was amplified when the agency created an installation that toured Belgian shopping centres featuring a full-size Alfa Romeo MiTo sticking out of a trolley full of everyday shopping items.
Alexandre De Preter, communication manager for Alfa Romeo Belgium, says: “Sales of Alfa Romeo are up by 80% compared with same time last year, the Alfa Romeo MiTo producing a stunning +168% sale (vs 2009). January 2010 has been the best January sales in history. Most importantly of all, the campaign manages to make the car cheap without making the brand cheap”.
Reports the FT: “It is a delicate balancing act to convey low prices without devaluing the brand’s core values of innovation and driving pleasure; and, in the age of the internet when the message could easily spread beyond the intended target, it is particularly important to get it right. This promotion pulls it off with the kind of flair the Alfisti would expect.”
